Let Him Speak (2)

The other night, we gathered our kids into the bedroom for family devotion. About a minute into a worship song, our 1-year-old daughter decided to sing her rendition of “The Alphabet Song." I don’t know if our 2-year-old son was "in the Spirit" or just praying we'd finish quickly so he could get back to Peppa Pig, but he had his eyes closed and head tilted up...that is until he heard: "A,B,C,D."

Immediately, he opened his eyes, let out a giggle and joined his sister’s chorus: “...H, I, J, K, Ello-lello, P...”  Meanwhile, our 3 month-old quietly watched all the action from the bed with a face that looked puzzled, interested and “just happy to be here” all at once. Since there was no stopping it, we let them get to “Z” then prayed and went into the scripture for the evening:

Habakkuk 2:1-2

" 1 I will stand upon my watch and set me upon the tower and will watch to see what he will say to me and what he will say to me, and what I will answer when I am reproved. 2 And the Lord answered me, and said..."

As I reflected on this passage, many things stood out to me. This was a person who was waiting to hear from God and did. But how?

" I will stand upon my watch..."

Where are you suppose to be? Some of us are outside of the will of God, yet we expect God to answer our prayers. We are consciously doing things we know are wrong, yet we continue to do them anyway and still expect to God to bless us anyway.

"...and set me upon the tower and will watch to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer when I am reproved..."

Position yourself. Do whatever it takes to remove distractions so that you can concentrate on hearing from God. Sometimes you have to limit your movement. Clear your schedule a bit so you're not too exhausted to pray. Sometimes, it requires distancing yourself from people for a season or cutting them off completely. Whatever you have to do to reduce the noise around you, do it. It changes everything.

Let Him Speak.
